Alexander the Great

A post in our latest news section.

Year 3 have made an exciting start to their new history topic all about Alexander the Great. In their first lesson, the children explored what life was like for Greek soldiers, known as hoplites. They learned how these soldiers fought in a powerful formation called a phalanx, standing shoulder to shoulder with their shields raised. The class were particularly interested in the long spears used in battle, called sarissas, and how these helped the army to defend themselves and attack effectively. It was a great introduction to the topic and the children are already looking forward to learning more.
