Exploring Shadows in Year 3!

A post in our latest news section.

As part of our ‘Light’ topic in science, we have been learning all about how shadows are formed. We discovered that shadows are made when an object blocks the light and stops it from passing through.

This week, we carried out an exciting experiment to investigate how the distance between an object and a light source affects the size of its shadow. Before we began, we made our own predictions about what we thought would happen. Then we tested our ideas by moving objects closer to and further away from the light, measuring the changes carefully.

We found that the closer an object is to the light source, the bigger its shadow becomes — and the further away it moves, the smaller the shadow gets. Many of our predictions were correct, and we loved seeing science in action!

We showed fantastic teamwork, curiosity, and careful observation throughout the investigation. Well done, Year 3!
